All of the medical and legal aspects of being a surrogate mother aside, the can be some difficult psychological issues. Everyone participating in the surrogate motherhood program deals with their own unique stresses associated with surrogacy, not the least of which is the surrogate mother.
Maternal Instinct
While at first a surrogate may feel it will be easy to part with the infant at the end of pregnancy, during that time there are undeniable bonds developing. A woman who endures the challenges of pregnancy and delivery, then parting with the child immediately after birth may face her own difficulties as part of that separation adjustment. Most women will need additional emotional support to cope with the separation anxiety that follows birth. It is important to help the surrogate transfer her motherly instincts back to her own children, as they too are affected by the process they have watched their mother go through.
Anxiety for the child
Studies have shown that part of the surrogate process for a woman includes anxiety for the health and welfare of the unborn child she is carrying and concern for the infant after delivery. The surrogate may worry about the proper care of the baby by its genetic parents.
Family concerns
It is important to remember the emotional challenges faced by the husband and children of the surrogate. The wife/mother is needing to focus her energy on the birth of a child that is not going to be a part of their family. being removed from the genetic ties to the surrogate infant can bring forth a need for help to deal with any issues between the surrogate and her family.
These are only some of the stresses that may be encountered during surrogacy. We are now offering “Psychologist Online” to offer emotional support to surrogate mothers.
